Biography

Hubert Staudigel is Senior Research Geophysicist at the Institute for Geophysics and Planetary Physics at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Lecturer at the Earth Science Graduate Department at University of California San Diego.  He completed his undergraduate studies in mineralogy and petrology in 1975 at the Ruhr University Bochum (Germany) followed by his PhD in volcanology and geochemistry in 1981.  He did most of his PhD work in the US, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and at Lamont ”“ Doherty Geological Observatory.  He moved from Lamont to Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1983.  In 1991 he became director of the Dutch National Laboratory for Isotope Geology and Full Professor in Isotope Geochemistry and Igneous Petrology at the Free University of Amsterdam.  He returned to Scripps in 1996.

Staudigel’s scientific interests aim broadly at volcanoes, how they work, exploring their impact on the geochemistry of the hydrosphere, the lithosphere and biosphere. Recent work focus in particular on seamount biogeosciences and the interaction of microbes with volcanic rocks. In addition, Staudigel works with paleomagnetists using the magnetic properties of volcanic rocks to explore the behavior of the earths’ magnetic field.  Staudigel also works with the San Diego Unified School District teaching communication and helping graduate students translate their research into high and middle school curricula.
